Welcome!
My poet is Gwendolyn Brooks. She was a very influential poet- she was appointed the poet laureate of Illinois, and later was named what is now called the poet laureate of the United States. She was one of the first major African-American poets to reach this level of distinction, since during her early career, the country was finally beginning to achieve a higher level of racial equality. She had a very long career which involved publishing many volumes of poetry, all the way from 1945 to 2000. Brooks tended to discuss race and the problems faced by urban Americans in her poetry. The connection that Brooks has to Darian's poet, Evie Shockley, is that they are both African-American poets. We're comparing an early African-American poet, Gwendolyn Brooks, to one who is still actively writing poetry today, Evie Shockley, and finding the differences in the subject matter between the two.
Evie Shockley is the poet that Darian chose for the Final Project. Evie is an African American poet she wrote about a lot of personal concerns that she dealt with as an African American in America. The discriminative issues she had to battle with as a southern poet with a southern accent. She analyzed and wrote down a lot about the nature of African American’s. She writes about her own personal struggle growing up in a low income home. And today she brings a special light to this issue in our society
and how low income and struggling for the Black community needs to come to an end.
